ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber plays an important role in modern warfare, spaceflight, maritime operations and defensive equipment. Thanks to its many outstanding properties, it shows great advantages in the high-performance fiber market, ranging from mooring lines for offshore oil fields to high-performance lightweight composite materials.
The following sections describe several UHMWPE fiber applications in civilian fields:
Sports Equipment: UHMWPE fiber can be used as a reinforcing material for rackets, helmets, skis, windsurfing boards, fishing rods, surfboards and bicycle frames, and can also be used directly to make fishing lines and racket strings. Because UHMWPE fiber composites have high specific strength and specific stiffness along with good toughness and damage tolerance, the sports equipment made from them is both light and durable. Demand for such leisure and recreational products has continued to rise with improving living standards.

Medical Polymer Materials: UHMWPE fiber has good biocompatibility and durability as well as good chemical stability, and it does not cause allergic or biological rejection reactions in the human body. As a biomedical material it has been successfully applied in dental base materials, medical implants, medical sutures and artificial organs.
Marine Structural Materials: Because UHMWPE fiber composites are moisture-proof, resistant to seawater corrosion, wear-resistant and cut-resistant, ships and racing boats made from them are lightweight and have durable hulls, improving their overall performance. The material is also widely used for lifeboats, sails, canvas awnings and waterproof clothing.

Building Materials: UHMWPE fiber composites can be used for walls, partitions and other structures. Cement composites reinforced with high-strength PE staple fiber can improve the toughness and strength of cement and enhance impact resistance, with overall performance far superior to ordinary reinforced concrete. In addition, UHMWPE fiber composites can be used to repair roads, bridges, buildings and pipelines, with a simple and fast process, low cost and high reliability.
