1. Import substitution is being achieved step by step for mid- and low-end products, while breakthroughs are still needed in high-end fields
With strong support from the state and the joint efforts of researchers, China’s ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber industry has developed rapidly, and the country has become a major producer of UHMWPE fiber, with import substitution gradually achieved for mid- and low-end products. However, China is not yet a strong player in UHMWPE fiber: both production technology and production equipment still differ from advanced international levels, and the mechanical properties of domestic UHMWPE fiber only reach the medium level of comparable products from developed countries, leaving it uncompetitive in high-end products. Domestic companies are therefore accelerating research and development, building high-end capacity and improving key product indicators to achieve a breakthrough toward higher-end products.

2. Lowering Product Costs and Expanding New Application Areas
UHMWPE fiber offers outstanding properties such as ultra-high strength, ultra-high modulus, low density, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. Beyond military equipment, the marine industry and safety protection, civilian fields such as textiles, sports equipment and construction are also broad areas in which UHMWPE fiber can demonstrate its unique performance. In recent years, as technical research and industrial application of UHMWPE fiber have advanced across the board and product costs have gradually fallen, application areas and demand will continue to expand, moving step by step into new civilian fields with considerable market potential.
3. Improving Product Performance and Diversifying the Product Mix
At present, the UHMWPE fiber industry’s most common pain point is poor heat resistance and creep resistance, which makes the fiber unusable at high temperatures or under prolonged stretching. However, manufacturers can change the surface tackiness of UHMWPE fiber by adding modifiers or adjusting ultraviolet radiation, thereby improving its heat resistance and creep resistance while losing as little of the fiber’s mechanical performance as possible. Mastering modification technology can drive the upgrading and replacement of UHMWPE fiber products, solve the problem of a single product structure within the industry, and is also key to differentiated competition in the future.
